Tyler House
Services provided by ideADesign Costa Rica: Consulting, Architectural Design, Construction Plans, Permitting, and Construction.
This house holds a very special significance in our memory and our hearts as it was the first house we built after founding our company, ideA Design & Build Solutions.
The experience of this project marked a turning point in the history of our company. Despite our founder Diego Solís having extensive experience in designing and constructing various residential and commercial projects, and even having his ego boosted a bit by being featured in SuCasa Magazine from the Grupo Nación, which was the most prestigious architecture magazine in Costa Rica, we encountered a significant challenge with this first project. The owner, Mike Tyler, was a construction engineer from Florida, which meant a steep learning curve to understand and humbly adapt to the demands of American construction standards. These standards contrasted sharply with the almost nonexistent construction standards in Costa Rica that we were accustomed to.
Although at times during the process we felt powerless due to the frustration of having much of our work corrected by Mike, we were blessed to have encountered a very kind and patient couple as clients. The Tylers practically became our mentors during the initial years of consolidating our company, for which we’ll always be grateful.
The design:
This was also the first time we were informed that our bid was competing with five other design and construction companies, but being chosen despite being newcomers to the area brought us great satisfaction. We were also fortunate that these clients allowed us creative freedom in our design, resulting in a house whose lines were suggested by the use of passive design strategies tailored to the functional needs of the owners.
The outcome:
The result was a contemporary architectural masterpiece where the quality of space is felt as soon as you walk through it, discovering clearly defined private and social areas, cross ventilation, and efficient natural lighting in all spaces.
The ocean and mountain views from every room in the house deserve a special mention, which we maximized with an infinity pool finished with Crystal Stones, a material that was a novelty for us accustomed to the typical small “chiclet” tile on pools.
Intelligent systems, a Tesla pool pump, a photovoltaic (PV) energy system, PEX plumbing, standing seam roof covering, and a general house floor made of polished natural stone tiles called Coralina, extracted from fossilized coral deposits in the Caribbean, among other amenities, undoubtedly make this house a treasure that marked our lives.
Located in Phase 5 of Ojochal, in Osa, you’ll find this smart house embracing us with its remarkable features and its heartwarming memory.
